Dr. Xiangmin Liu (supervised by Prof. Yuping Chen) from OLAB Laboratory, Institute of Optical Science and Technology, School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, participated in the CLEO 2023 (Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, SAN Jose, California, USA) and give an invited talk. With a distinguished history as the industry's leading event on laser science, CLEO is the premier international forum for scientific and technical optics, uniting the fields of lasers and opto-electronics by bringing together all aspects of laser technology, from basic research to industry applications. CLEO was presented as an in-person-only meeting for the first time in post-pandemic era. 1,300 + Contributed and 200 Invited Oral Talks were presented across 220 Technical Sessions. Additionally, 400 Posters, 20 Tutorials, and 15 Special Sessions.

At the meeting, Dr. Xiangmin Liu made an invited talk entitled "Photonic crystal laser on thin film erbium-doped lithium niobate", and in-depth exchanges with the colleagues. In this work, we have achieved the photonic crystal laser on thin film erbium-doped lithium niobate for the first time. We demonstrated a single mode laser at 1559.63 nm by injecting the pump light at 974 nm into the photonic crystal nanobeam cavity, and achieved a small mode volume (1.63 um3) on-chip compact light source on erbium-doped LNOI. This work is expected to play an important role in photonic applications such as high density on-chip integrated photonics, short-distance optical communication and sensing. The work was achieved by Prof. Yuping Chen and Prof. Xianfeng Chen's research group of Advanced Photonics Materials and Physics Laboratory of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
